I love me: I can love you

Ever wonder why during on-flight presentations they instruct you to put on your mask before putting on the masks on your dependent loved ones in the case of an emergency? It’s because you can’t really help them if you haven’t secured yourself first.

It’s a theme worth considering when it comes to love. Indeed the good book asks us to love our neighbours even as we love ourselves…it means that we ought to love ourselves and use that as a framework for loving others. It is true that sometimes we don’t love others because we don’t love ourselves. But here are three powerful women who are making significant 2010 resolutions geared at developing themselves and others.

  • Make-over.  I will turn 40 in June 2010 and I am ecstatic.  I almost died during surgery to remove fibroids this year.  Life gained new significance to me after that. When I make it to 40 I will celebrate.
  • Visit Panama Canal. I have been dreaming about this since 1998 but kept putting it off.  I am going on a Panama cruise in April 2010.
  • Finish my novel “The Survivors”.  Started this in 2004.  This novel is about a woman who was sold into prostitution in Jamaica during 19th Century.
  • Get a vehicle.  I think I put off this one long enough.
  • Start developing family property in Port Antonio.  An unused asset.  I am putting all my assets to work next year.

  • To be more patient
  • To drink more water each day.
  • To be more tax efficient in my investing strategy.
  • To invest in my education
  • To begin saving for my 6 months old baby’s medical and law school tuition.

  • Develop a beauty (skin, hair, fitness) and relaxation regimen and follow it.
  • Spend 30 minutes with God every single day. How else will I know Him, do His will and reflect His glory?
  • Spend more meaningful time with my husband and two girls. Sometimes I am with them but my mind is elsewhere, especially with the girls. I want to schedule my time so that when I am with them I am not thinking about work or something else that needs to be done.
  • Volunteer my services (public speaking and deportment) to school girls living in the inner-city. Sometimes we complain about the state of the country and forget that we can make a difference in people’s lives. Being able to clearly express yourself is vital to happiness and personal growth. I hope to contribute my services to WROC’s homework programme. (Joel please place link for homework feature)
  • To produce socially impactful television and radio programming. Watch and listen!
